The National Testing Agency (NTA) has recently been under controversy, in which more than sixty students scored a perfect 720/720, against the usual average of only two or three students every year. On July 18th, the Supreme Court of India ordered NTA to release results by noon on July 20. NTA was told to publish city-wise and center-wise results and with dummy roll numbers to ensure transparency and maintain the confidentiality of students’ identities.

This action was taken after allegations of paper leaks in the exam that was conducted on May 5, 2024, The CJI, DY Chandrachud also noted that the primary motive behind the leaking of the question paper was monetary gain, and therefore, the people behind this scandal would have wanted to avoid massive attention to the malpractice.
One of the focal points of the NEET controversy was the exam centers in Godhra. The NTA informed the court that thirty-four candidates from Godhra had applied for a change of exam city, out of which only fourteen applicants were approved. Of these, only one candidate passed the exam. The NTA emphasized that there were only two exam centers in Godhra, accommodating 1,860 and 654 students respectively. It was also revealed that an attempt to manipulate the OMR sheets at these centers was thwarted by the actions of the district administration. Furthermore, an analysis of the results from these centers did not indicate any unusually high scores. If this would have been the case, it would have been clear that successful malpractice had taken place.

Furthermore, the court thwarted the NTA’s hypothesis that the paper was leaked, solved, and memorized by students within a short span of forty-five minutes, suggesting the need for a thorough investigation into these claims.

The Supreme Court’s order to publish the NEET-UG results in a manner that protects the candidates’ identities aims to balance transparency with privacy. By directing the NTA to release the results with dummy roll numbers, the court seeks to maintain the confidentiality of the students while ensuring that the results are accessible for scrutiny.
