Lokendra, an MBBS student at Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College and Research Institution, died by suicide on June 10, 2024. His father, Amit Dhandey, alleged that his son faced relentless caste-based harassment from his peers, which pushed him to take this tragic step. Lokendra was known for his academic dedication to pursuing MBBS. He attempted the National-Eligibility-cum-Entrance-Test (NEET) twice, and secured a place in a prestigious medical college, bringing pride to his family.

Amit claims Lokendra endured derogatory remarks and discriminatory behaviour that left him isolated and emotionally distressed. This hostile environment allegedly deteriorated Lokendra’s mental health, leading to his suicide. These allegations highlight the persistent caste-based discrimination in Indian educational institutions, which severely affects marginalized students.

Amit also alleged that the college authorities and Lokendra’s peers went through his belongings after he was found dead. WhatsApp chats from Lokendra’s phone were also found to be deleted. Amit also claimed that none of the faculty members came to meet the family when they arrived to get Lokendra’s body back and that being his guardian while Lokendra was away from home, they did not care for him while he was alive nor when he died.

Lokendra’s tragic death underscores the ongoing issue of caste discrimination in India. Despite legal protections and affirmative action, caste-based prejudices continue in various forms. This case has ignited debates about the effectiveness of current policies and the need for stronger measures to combat discrimination.

Lokendra’s death is a reminder of the urgent need for systemic change. It calls for introspection and action from educational institutions, policymakers, and society to create supportive student environments. The investigation into his death is a call to address and eliminate deep-rooted biases, aiming for an educational system where every student can pursue their dreams free from harassment and discrimination. Lokendra’s case should inspire a renewed commitment to building a more equitable society.
